Summer is almost here! Whether you’re fair or dark skinned, you should incorporate sunscreen into your daily beauty regimen. No matter where you live, we’re all at risk for melanoma. In fact, one out of five Americans will develop skin cancer. You can find out more about skin cancer, here. But what about sun spots, wrinkles, and aging from sun damage? As a model, I’ve learned that the key to youthful looking skin is sunscreen, because it helps maintain evenness in skin tone and suppleness in texture. It’s not hard to add sunscreen to your at-home beauty process, but it’s often hard to find the right one. Because I’m also a runner, I spend a lot of time outside, and I don’t wear anything less than SPF 50+.
Before we discuss products, let’s talk about what all of it means. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, protection, that is, against ultraviolet B rays. UVB rays are responsible for sunburns, and UVA rays can cause skin damage and may even lead to skin cancer. To protect against both types of rays, you have to look for a broad spectrum sunscreen and couple that with a high SPF. To choose the SPF number that best works for you, consider this equation: the minutes it takes to burn without sunscreen x SPF number = the maximum amount of sun exposure. That means if you normally burn after 10 minutes, and you apply SPF 15, then the maximum amount of time you have is 150 minutes. Exposure to water or sweat decreases protection; therefore, sunscreen must be reapplied. Finally, if you spend a lot of time driving, don’t forget to use sunscreen on your hands. So now on to the products that protect against both UVA and UVB rays, I’ve narrowed some of the top five sunscreens on the market, with Kiehl’s being my absolute favorite!
The Real Deal: Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50 +
It’s super fluid, goes on silky smooth, and doesn’t leave any white residue. I use this in conjunction with my face cream and foundation, mainly for my face, neck, and chest because it’s fragrance free, non-comedogenic, and recommended for sensitive skin.
Out and About: Aveeno Protect + Hydrate Lotion SPF 70
I really love how moisturizing this lotion is, but keep in mind that it isn’t fragrance free. This sunscreen comes off when you sweat, and it must be reapplied. So, think shopping or taking a stroll to your favorite coffee shop.
If you were a fan of the discontinued Neutrogena Oil-Free Sunblock Stick SPF 30, then you’ll love this too. It isn’t greasy or shiny, so you don’t have to worry about sand sticking to your face and clogging your pores. Though it’s not that sheer, it’s PABA free and contains Neutrogena’s Helioplex technology, adding extra protection against those scary UVA rays.
Hardcore Exercise: Skinceuticals Sport UV Defense SPF 50
This sunscreen is for the serious athlete. So, if you’re going on a day hike or planning on running a marathon, you need this sunscreen. It leaves a bit of a white filmy residue; but rest assured, it will keep UVA rays at bay, so you can exercise without worrying about sun exposure.
The Easy Breezy: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20
If you don’t like the idea of adding layers of sunscreen, moisturizer, and foundation on your face, a tinted moisturizer with SPF is for you, and who better than French makeup artist and icon Laura Mercier to trust with your face.
Beautiful skin starts with healthy skin. Protect yourself from the sun this summer, and look younger longer.
Until next time,
